Zihuatanejo is a hidden gem on the Pacific coast of Mexico. When a small sleepy fishing village, Zihuatanejo today, with its twin city of Ixtapa located a few miles north, is a growing tourism magnet for foreign visitors who have not lost its charm - at least not again. For mexperts there, you might be surprised to find that quiet Ixtapa is currently second only to Cancun and Puerto Vallarta as the most popular destination for tourists from north of the border. In many ways, Zihuatanejo, Acapulco which was to be back in the 1950s and 1960s when it was at its peak in terms of international chic - probably too many reasons to Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are doing today. Zihuatanejo is a traditional Mexican town, situated on a bay gently, surrounded by a ring of green mountains. While Acapulco has grown to more than half a million people, Zihuatanejo is a quiet town, about 60 000, while Ixtapa has 6,000 inhabitants.
While the beaches and beautiful tropical landscapes and Mexican culture are the real attractions, Zihuatanejo also offers a variety of stylish shops, nightlife and a couple of very good restaurants. Most of the nightlife, but in Ixtapa. Chains linked to Ixtapa sites also offer free entertainment on most nights, dozens of shops and a variety of restaurants. What makes Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa so special is that, if both be very "tourist" high season are unusually clean, well maintained and pleasant. Ixtapa, in particular, deserves a prize for the best-kept tourist city in Mexico. Aside from a handful of street vendors some emphasis on the destination offers a guarantee of hassle-free experience in what is still very underdeveloped tropical paradise.A one of the things we have to do something, whereas in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are visiting La Ropa, Playa Las Gatas and Palmar. Make a trip to the island.
Enjoy it now ... 20 years, developers have probably destroyed.
One of the main attractions of the destination is the spectacular collection of beaches. Zihuatanejo has four beaches, two of which are truly exceptional. Although Playa Principal and Playa Madera are the beautiful beaches, Playa La Ropa and Playa Las Gatas are the real stars of the show. And then Ixtapa, with the amazing Playa Palmar, the main beach area, with its interesting rock formations, sandy beaches located in the open ocean. A drive further north is a tropical paradise, "The Island" as known in the city (as in Zihua Las Gatas, La Isla is only accessible by boat).
Walking through the center of Zihuatanejo, a dinner at the restaurants in the mountains around Zihuatanejo, and do some shopping for authentic souvenirs handmade, and a long walk (or turn) throughout the cycle path that runs through Ixtapa. For the more adventurous, there is fishing, boating, parasailing, scuba diving and snorkeling.
